<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase the amount of information on a failure, thereby to shorten the time required for specifying the cause of the failure and to prevent a vehicle from being run without its abnormality or bad condition being noticed, by a method wherein a failure code is not erased, but stored in a device for collecting data on the vehicle, which is so provided as to be contactable with and separable from an electronic control device, when the bad condition and the abnormality of an engine are detected and even when the same phenomenon is not detected again. Ž<P>SOLUTION: An arithmetic processing means receives real abnormality discrimination data which are abnormality data and used for discrimination as a real abnormality on the occasion of discrimination of the real abnormality, due to their occurrences in a plurality, and also receives temporary abnormality determination data which are abnormality data and used for temporary abnormality determination, which are used for discrimination as not being the real abnormality on the occasion of discrimination of the real abnormality, due to the fact that they does not occur in succession, and which are stored in and erased from a storage device of the electronic control device. The temporary abnormality determination data and driving state data on the vehicle at the time of the occurrence of a temporary abnormal state are stored in the storage means.
