A hybrid type vehicle driven by an engine (1) and motor generators (MG1, MG2), in which the engine (1) is provided with a variable compression ratio mechanism (A) and a variable valve timing mechanism (B). When the vehicle reverses, an output for driving the vehicle is generated by one (MG2) of the motor generators. In this case, if the engine (1) is operated, engine torque (Te) and engine speed (Ne) are changed along an operating line (K1) for minimum fuel consumption.
