ACOUSTIC APPARATUS AND METHOD OF OPERATION

A method and apparatus for remotely applying pressure to a target comprises a sound energy source, for generating compression waves in air, and a focussing element arranged to focus the compression waves to a convergence point remote from the apparatus, wherein the sound pressure at the convergence point is sufficient to disrupt, destroy or perturb matter located in the region of the convergence point. The method and apparatus have particular application to technologies for clearing land mines and other ordinance, particularly for clearing explosive devices which are triggered by pressure, and for mitigating the effect of incoming aerial munitions.
