A white LED (10) for the backlights of liquid-crystal display devices conforming to the EBU standard, the white LED (10) comprising an ultraviolet (violet light)-emitting element (1) and a fluorescent substance layer (2) constituted of a fluorescent substance comprising: 1-10 wt.% green fluorescent substance selected from fluorescent silicates activated with divalent europium; 40-80 wt.% blue fluorescent substance selected from fluorescent halophosphates activated with divalent europium and fluorescent aluminates activated with divalent europium; and 10-50 wt.% red fluorescent substance selected from fluorescent lanthanum oxysulfides activated with europium and fluorescent yttrium oxysulfides activated with europium.
