In a conveyer consisting of two portions pivotally connected, each portion consisting of an upper and a lower set of guide rails upon which run rollers mounted on transverse spindles and interconnected by an endless chain or chains, profiled plates depend from the chains at each side and a continuous belt is associated with the plates and spindles in such a way that a pocket is formed between successive pairs of rollers. The two portions 1, 3, Fig. 1, pivotally connected at 9. comprise guide rails 25, 27, 29, 31 on which run the rollers 23 interconnected by endless chains 21, which are passed over end sprockets 13, 19, one of which is driven by a motor 15, Fig. 6. Portion 3 is mounted on a carriage in an elevated position to travel under a hopper, Fig. 6. Coal from the hopper is fed to the pockets of the conveyer on portion 3 and passes via portion 1, which is suitably adjusted, into a vehicle or hold of a ship. The pockets are formed by an endless belt 47 which is threaded over the spindles 33 on which rollers 23 are mounted, and under profiled plates 37 fixed to the endless chains at each side between the spindles 33. The plates 37 are cranked, Fig. 4 so that they lie within the edges of the belt 47 and are provided with a flange 45 extending around the bottom and sides. The belt 47 is secured to this flange by means of a bent strip 45<SP>1</SP> and bolts 49. Some slack is left between adjacent plates 37 so that, owing to the stiffness of the belt, the belt lies clear of the spindles 33. The leading edges of the plates 37 are vertical while the trailing edges are about 45 degrees to the horizontal when conveying horizontally so that when conveying downwardly, Fig. 6, material does not spill out of the pockets thus formed. |
