<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lighting arrester preventing charges distributed in a thunder cloud from being saturated by taking in charges opposite to charges of a lower electrode by an upper electrode from the surrounding atmosphere, when the thunder cloud approaches a thunder arresting pole member. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The lighting arrester includes an upper discharge electrode body 6 disposed so as to surround an upper recessed part 2a formed in the upper electrode body 2, and a lower discharge electrode body 7 disposed so as to surround a lower recessed part 3a formed in a lower electrode body 7, and also includes a principle member composed of a cylindrical insulator 4 held between the upper electrode body 6 and the lower electrode body 7, and an insulation holding body 5 engaged with the cylindrical insulator. When the thunder cloud approaches a lightning arresting pole member, the upper electrode body functions so as to cancel a potential difference between itself and the lower electrode body having charges opposite to the charges distributed in the thunder cloud, the upper electrode body takes in the charges opposite to the charges of the lower electrode body from the surrounding atmosphere to prevent the charges distributed in the thunder cloud from being saturated, and falling of thunderbolts is thereby avoided.
