<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent erroneous detection to an unneeded object without being influenced by the strength of reflection of different radio waves depending on objects. <P>SOLUTION: The difference between detection waveforms and reference waveforms is calculated (S5), and it is determined whether a differential signal having a strength of not less than a threshold S at distance h has been obtained. As a result, when the strength of the differential signal at distance h is not less than the threshold S, it is determined that the signal is a reflection from an unneeded object, such as manholes on a road, metal joints, or the like. When the strength of the differential signal at distance h is less than the threshold S, it is further determined whether time t required for detecting objects or time t for continuing to detect objects successively is not less than a threshold (L+B)/V according to vehicle speed V.
