<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a defect management method for an information recording medium, notifying whether defect management by a drive has abnormally ended due to an unpredictable abnormal event during data recording in the information recording medium, and to provide an information recording medium drive, and the information recording medium. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The defect management method for information recording medium includes; a step (a) of writing first state information showing that an update cycle of a temporary defect management structure is opened when updating of the temporary defect management structure containing information on temporary defect management is started; a step (b) of updating the temporary defect management structure when data is written to or read from the information recording medium; and a step (c) of writing second state information showing that the update cycle of the temporary defect management structure is closed when the updating of the temporary defect management structure is completed.
