PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of manufacturing a liquid crystal display device, providing an alignment layer decreased in rubbing marks and having reliability. SOLUTION: A first multiple-panel substrate LSB1 is opposite to a second multiple-panel substrate LSB2 where a plurality of columnar spacers are formed. In the first multiple-panel substrate LSB1, a laminate including a first organic insulating film and a resin film are sequentially formed in a plurality of rectangular panel substrate regions PSD, and a plurality of patterned metal films and a plurality of second rectangular organic insulating films serving as seats for the columnar spaces are intermingled with each other in a non-panel region. In this method of manufacturing a liquid crystal display device, the resin film formed on the top of the laminate is subjected to rubbing in the direction substantially parallel to or vertical to the array direction of the panel substrate regions PSD, thereby forming an alignment layer. The shape of a side positioned at the rubbing starting side of the first organic insulating film is formed at a predetermined angle other than 0°and 90°to the rubbing direction.
