An image of a mark (M), that is, a parking target located on the ground of a parking space (S) is captured by a video camera (10) on board a vehicle (100), and recognition processing is carried out on the mark (M) from the captured image. If the position on the image where the mark (M) is thought to exist is designated by the driver by a parking target designation unit (50), the parking target recognition unit (20) sets a range, as a photometric region (R), centered around the designated position, and controls the exposure conditions of the video camera (10) so as to match the recognition processing of the mark (M) based on the luminance value of the photometric region (R), and thereby adjusts the luminance value of the image.
