PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rubber composition which shows an excellent abrasion resistance, low pyrogenic properties and the like, and good on-ice performance and wet performance together, and to provide a pneumatic tire using the same. SOLUTION: The rubber composition comprises a butadiene polymer having a conjugate modifying group in the rubber component, and is a rubber composition having closed-cell during and/or after vulcanization, wherein the butadiene type polymer is modified by a modifier which is a heterocyclic nitrile compound represented by formula (I):θ-C≡N, or formula (II):θ-R-C≡N, and comprises 40% or more of cis-content.
