<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a multi-hop radio communication system for further enhancing a communication capacity for the system as a whole than conventional systems. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A base station and a relay station are connected to a first communication line for performing multi-hop radio communication and are also connected to a second communication line different from the first line. The base station selects the communication line for transmitting a packet to a mobile terminal to the relay station, from the first and second communication lines in response to a communication condition. When the first communication line is selected, the base station transmits the packet to the relay station via the first communication line and transmits a radio resource assignment schedule to the relay station. When the second communication line is selected, the base station transmits the packet to the relay station via the second communication line, determines the schedule, based on the communication quality of the second communication line, and transmits the schedule to the relay station.
