PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an echo canceller that can quickly follow an echo and remove it without especially making the size of a device large even when an echo passage sharply changes and a delay of echo signal changes. SOLUTION: The echo canceller has a pseudo echo generation means including an adaptive filter. It also includes: an initial delay estimation means that forms a reference signal including specific frequency elements subject to masking by a frequency masking effect, outputs it to an echo passage, detects the echo elements of specific frequency elements originating from a transmission signal and a reference signal, and obtains the quantity of initial delay in the echo passage on the basis of the formation timing of the reference signal including the specific frequency elements and the detection timing of echo elements of the specific frequency elements in the transmission signal; and a delay giving means that gives the quantity of initial delay in the echo passage to a received signal by the initial delay estimation means and gives it to the false echo generation means.
