<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus that cleans off residual toner on an intermediate transfer belt, without fail and keeps the intermediate transfer belt clean after secondary transfer. Ž<P>SOLUTION: On the basis of the detection value of an optical sensor 65, a control section 80 controls a cleaning current flowing in a cleaning roller 38. That is, according to the change in the resistance value of the intermediate transfer belt 12 that results from the roughness (thickness) of the intermediate transfer belt 12, the control section 80 decides on an appropriate cleaning current I<SB>3</SB>for the cleaning roller 38.
