PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact wide-angle zoom lens system formed from in order from an object side, a first lens group of negative refractive power, a second lens group of positive refractive power, and a third lens group of positive refractive power, wherein various aberrations, such as distortion aberration and astigmatic difference, are successfully corrected in the entire focal distance area. SOLUTION: For zooming from a short focal distance end to a long focal distance end, the wide-angle zoom lens system moves the first to third lens groups so as to decrease the interval between the first and second lens groups and the interval between the second and third lens groups. The system satisfies a conditional expression (1) 2.45<f3/fw<3.5, wherein f3 is the focal distance of a third lens group, and fw is the focal distance of the entire system at the short focal distance end.
