PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an article holding device which can throw an article into a container making the article in a falling down sideways posture appropriately. SOLUTION: A holding means 51 in a classification apparatus 1 is equipped with a device body 56 and a rotating body 65 provided rotatably in the device body 56. A pair of pinching and holding bodies to pinch and hold an opening mouth part W1 at the upper end of the article W in a standing posture is provided at the rotating body 65. A sucking and holding means to suck and hold a side face which faces upward in the falling down sideways posture among side faces of the article W in a standing posture, is provided at the rotating body 65. The holding means 51 throws the article held in the standing posture with the pinching and holding bodies and the sucking and holding means into the container for shipping after changing the standing posture to the falling down sideways posture by rotation of the rotating body 65 to the device body 56.
