PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately extract a desired area by searching for a high-effect initial area. SOLUTION: An area extraction device obtains an image (step S10), sets a temporary initial point in a position assumed that it is the center of an object photographed in the input image (step S12), and sets a plurality of temporary initial areas each having different size with the temporary initial point as the center (step S14). The area extraction device selects a desired temporary initial area from the plurality of temporary initial areas, generates and normalizes a histogram about each of a foreground and a background of the selected temporary initial area (step S16), and calculates a separation degree based on the normalized histogram (step S18). The area extraction device determines the temporary initial area calculated with the separation degree having a largest value of the separation degrees calculated to all the temporary initial areas as the initial area (step S24), and performs the area extraction by use of the initial area (step S26).
