An apparatus for opening envelopes comprises a guide channel 2 along.which the marginal part of an envelope is passed and a cutting device comprising a roller 5 provided with a cutting edge 8 and an abutment roller 4 spaced from the roller 5 by a distance corresponding to, or preferably somewhat smaller than, the thickness of the wall of the envelope. The roller 5 is connected to a knurled disc 9 for manual operation. The rollers are mounted on adjustable pins 6, 7 in a pocket 3 of a frame 1 in which the guide channel is provided. The roller 4 may be replaced by a fixed abutment with a smooth surface. The disc 9 may be constructed as a gear connected to a preferably motor-driven gear to form a feed device. Further feed devices may comprise one or more pairs of rollers, the rollers of each pair being arranged on both sides of the guide channel, one of the rollers being adapted to be driven, e.g. by means of a motor and the other rollers being resiliently pressed, e.g. by means of a spring, against the first roller. At least one of the feed rollers in each pair is provided with oblique ridges or the like.
