676,424. Discharge apparatus. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO., Inc. Nov. 16, 1948 [Dec. 4, 1947; Aug. 14, 1948], No. 29781/48. Addition to 676,411. Drawings to Specification. Classes 39 (i) and 39 (iv). [Also in Group XL (b)] A solid insulating body is said to be made conducting by the impact of radiation (including X and y rays, a and # particles, electrons, protons and mesons) and is irradiated with light to prevent the formation of a space charge. The insulating body, preferably of diamond, is a single crystal having electrodes as disclosed in the parent Specification. It is suggested that electrons released from atoms may enter the field of foreign atoms or imperfections in the crystal and thus not be collected before the initiating impact is succeeded by another, thus resulting in an effect similar to voltage saturation. It is stated that irradiation with light avoids this effect. The wavelength of the light may be selected. The insulating materials may be purified silicon carbide or stibnite as well as those materials given in the parent Specification.
