The method involves detecting a position of a toll collection device in a reference geographical zone from identifiers of current cells and reference cell identifiers. A locating module is activated if the position of the toll collection device in the reference geographical zone is detected. Absolute locating information is obtained from the locating module. An entry of the toll collection device in a geographical toll zone is detected from the locating information. The locating module is deactivated if the entry of the toll collection device in the toll zone is detected.
