678,995. Storing gases. MASCHINENFABRIK ESSLINGEN. Sept. 4, 1950 [Sept. 6, 1949], No. 21714/50. Class 8 (ii) Cold gas, e.g. carbon-dioxide stored above the liquid phase in a container 1 is drawn through a line 5 by a pump 6 by which it is compressed, and the gas is then liquefied by heat exchange in a coil 15 surrounded by the stored liquid before discharge through a valve 19. In operation the compressed gas is expanded at valves 16, 18 before traversing the coil 15 and thereby vaporizing liquid carbon-dioxide so as to maintain the gas pressure within the container 1. A portion of compressed gas traverses a water condenser 8 and liquefying valves 9, 10 before being fed into a line 2 by which the container 1 is normally supplied with liquefied gas. Gas leaving the valve 9 may be liquefied by expansion at a valve 11 and supplied through a line 12 to the utilizing apparatus. In a modification the heat exchange coil 15 is disposed outside the container 1 and within an evaporator chamber supplied with liquefied gas from said container, and the resulting vapour is returned to the inlet side of the pump 6. |
