A dry rectifier assembly comprises rectifier elements electrically connected in parallel and cooled by the application of an external cooling medium, the surfaces of the assembly to which the cooling medium has access being at the same electric potential. In Fig. 1, the rectifiers comprise plates 2 with semi-conductive layers 3 assembled in pairs with the layers 3 facing each other; metal discs 4 connect the layers 3 to a rod 5 insulated by a sleeve 6 from the plates 2 and their connecting sleeves 7; the plates 2 are welded together at their circumference, so that the surface exposed in the case 1 is at a uniform potential, and short-circuits cannot be caused by tools &c. dropped into the case. To ensure good contact between the discs 4 and the rod 5, the latter is flattened and the apertures in the discs are made non-circular so that on rotation, the discs grip the rod. Or, the rod may have notches 8, Fig. 6, and the discs with non-circular holes, may be rotated and forced up the incline to the position 9. The plates 2 may have a thin insulating layer between them at their circumference instead of being welded together Fig. 7 (not shown); the plates 2 are connected together by straps. In Fig. 8, a single rectifier 2, 3 has a cover-plate 12 welded to its base 2, insulating material 13 being interposed on the rod 5. In Fig. 9 the semiconductive layer 3 is on both faces of the plate 2, and is covered by a counter-electrode which extends over the circumference of the plate and is separated therefrom by an insulating layer 14. The rectifiers of Figs. 1 and 9, may be combined in one assembly, Figs. 10, 11 (not shown). Fig. 14 illustrates the convection cooling currents, and shows that an open top 2 may be used to the case 1, since a tool 6 dropped through will not short-circuit part of the rectifier assembly.</p>
