A method and apparatus for separating a first quantity of milk drawn from a milking animal in an automatic milking machine from a second quantity of milk drawn from a milking animal in the milking machine. An animal is milked using the automatic milking machine, and a small representative amount of said milk is collected during the milking. At least a part of the small representative amount of milk is analyzed using an on-line cell counter for counting the number of cells in said milk, and a valve is operated depending on the counted number of cells so that if the counted number of cells are below a threshold, the milk is collected in a first container. If the counted number of cells are equal to or above the threshold, the milk is directed to either a drain or a second container. |
