A transmission and method of operation is disclosed. The transmission comprises a first rotatable disc mounted coaxially about a longitudinal axis of the transmission with a plurality of tiltable balls placed angularly about the longitudinal axis and in contact with the first rotatable disc. A second rotatable disc is mounted coaxially about the longitudinal axis and in contact with the plurality of tiltable balls. An idler placed radially is located inward of, and in contact with, the plurality of tiltable balls, wherein the idler is nonrotatable relative to the longitudinal axis. There is a cage operably coupled to the plurality of tiltable balls. The cage is adapted to rotate freely without transferring power.
