PURPOSE: A method and a device for inputting characters of a portable terminal are provided to supply a similar environment to a keyboard of a PC(Personal Computer), thereby increasing convenience of a user. CONSTITUTION: A character input device of a portable terminal includes wheel keys for inputting characters, a storage unit(120), a control unit(110), and a display unit(130). The storage unit maps different characters according to a rotation amount of each wheel key and a rotation direction. The control unit recognizes characters corresponding wheel key operations by referring to the storage unit. The display unit displays the recognized characters.
