The present invention relates to a method for preparing polyarylene sulfide by polymerizing reactants containing diiodo aromatic compounds and sulfur compounds, in which diphenyl disulfide in the amount of 0.01 to 10.0 % of the weight of the polyarylene sulfide is added to the reactants, to prepare polyarylene sulfide with a melting point of 265 to 320°C. As the diphenyl sulfide contained in the reactants of the present invention costs less than other conventional polymerization inhibitors, manufacturing costs can be remarkably reduced. The polyarylene sulfide prepared using the diphenyl sulfide has a low iodine content and superior thermal stability.
