PURPOSE: A liquid crystal display and a manufacturing method thereof for making a cell thin are provided to reduce the number of layers of a phase difference layer on a lateral side. CONSTITUTION: A phase difference layer is formed on a liquid crystal layer of at least one substrate(2). The axis of a reflection unit(3) of the phase difference layer is similar to that of a transmission unit(4). The thickness of the liquid crystal layer is similar to that of the reflection unit. The thickness of the liquid crystal layer is different from that of the reflection unit by an inter-layer film patterned by the liquid crystal layer.
