A backlight device (12) is comprised of a cold-cathode tube (18); a chassis (14) which accommodates the cold-cathode tube (18); an inverter substrate (20) which is disposed on the opposite side of the cold-cathode tube (18) with respect to the chassis (14), and supplies a driving power to the cold-cathode tube (18); a relay connector (21) incorporated in the chassis (14), to or from which the inverter substrate can be inserted or removed in a direction along the surface thereof, so that electrical power is relayed between the inverter substrate (20) and the cold-cathode tube (18); and a cover (22) which is provided between the chassis (14) and the inverter substrate (20), and is composed of a material having a strength relatively lower than that of the chassis (14). A receiving portion (35) which can receive the inverter substrate (20) is provided in the chassis (14) so as to project toward the inverter substrate (20). A spacer (38) provided between the receiving portion (35) and the inverter substrate (20) is provided in the cover (22).
