NOVEL GENE DERIVED FROM CLOSTRIDIUM CELLULOVORANS AND USE THEREOF

Disclosed are: novel DNA encoding a protein which can glycosylate cellulose and hemicelluloses almost completely; a vector; a genetically engineered organism; and a process for producing a monosaccharide or a lower alcohol from cellulose or hemicellulose. Specifically disclosed are: a novel nucleotide sequence derived from Clostridium cellulovorans and depicted in any one of SEQ ID NO:1 to SEQ ID NO:170, or DNA which comprises a nucleotide sequence having a 90% or higher homology to the aforementioned nucleotide sequence and encoding a protein having an activity of decomposing cellulose or hemicellulose; and a process for producing a monosaccharide or a lower alcohol from cellulose or hemicellulose, which comprises a step of culturing a genetically engineered organism carrying the DNA in such a manner that the DNA can be expressed in the organism.
