PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow a smoothing processing circuit to effectively reduce unwanted noise to digital video signals changing for a short time as in fade-in/fade-out.

SOLUTION: The smoothing processing circuit reduces a gradation difference in a plane region of the digital video signal depending on parameters. A histogram acquisition section acquires a histogram value for one frame of the digital video signal. A histogram value buffer buffers histogram values for a plurality of frames. A luminance level transition detection section detects a fade-in/fade-out interval from the histogram values for the plurality of frames, and outputs correction parameters for reinforcing a reduction effect on the gradation difference of the plane region.
