PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pharmaceutical composition containing a water-soluble prodrug of propofol and a method of administering the prodrug. SOLUTION: There are provided, in one aspect, a method of inducing and/or maintaining a generalized anesthetic state comprising administration of the prodrug of propofol by parenteral infusion in an amount sufficient to cause and/or maintain loss of consciousness; and in another aspect, the prodrug of propofol administered for producing a sedated state in a subject.
