PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently and sufficiently suppress the occurrence of a speckle, even when coherent light is adopted. SOLUTION: The coherent light from a laser 210 is enlarged and made a parallel luminous flux LL. A hologram recording medium 220 on which the hologram image of a scattering plate is recorded is irradiated with the parallel luminous flux LL. The hologram reproduced real image 235 of the scattering plate is produced by using the parallel luminous flux LL as reproduced illumination light. A spatial light modulator 240 comprising a liquid crystal display, etc. is arranged to overlap the position of the hologram reproduced real image 235, and to obtain a modulated image on the surface of the reproduced real image 235 of the scattering plate. The modulated image is projected onto a screen 260 by a projection optical system 250. It is configured such that the light distribution angle θ of light made incident on one point Q1 on the screen 260 is 0.4° or more and the hologram recording medium 220 is periodically moved in an X-Y plane by a motor 225, so that the linear velocity of the light scanning on the screen 260 is 200 mm/sec. or more.
