<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lash adjuster providing stable operation and accurate clearance adjustment by enabling adjustment not only in an expansion direction but also in a contraction direction in a cam base circle period during which a valve lift mechanism is in a close state. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This lash adjuster includes an adjuster body 31 including an open end part, a close end part, and a bulkhead part, and a plunger 32 slidably inserted in the adjuster body 31. A high pressure chamber and an oil supply chamber are defined in the adjuster body 31. The bulkhead part 31W includes a communication hole 31q providing communication between the high pressure chamber and the oil supply chamber. The lash adjuster includes a check valve 33 opening and closing a communication hole 31r, a plunger spring 34 pressing the plunger 32, a check valve opening means 35 opening a check valve 33, and an interlocking means 36 interlocking an open action of the check valve opening means 35 and rotation action of the cam 22 for moving the plunger 32 through a locker arm 23.
