<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved technique for selectively extracting Doppler information from blood vessels by using continuous waves. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A selection width is varied for a plurality of selection widths including the selection width greater than an intersecting section IS of a blood vessel 100 and ultrasonic beams 70 and the selection width smaller than the intersecting section IS, and Doppler signals are extracted for respective selection widths. For example, a width d of a sample gate 72 is varied from a width d<SB>1</SB>to a width d<SB>6</SB>, and the Doppler signal is extracted for each of the widths. When the selection width is greater than the intersecting section IS, the Doppler signals for the whole blood flow intersecting with the ultrasonic beams 70 are extracted. Consequently, the electric power of the extracted Doppler signals shows a tendency to remain constant independently from the largeness of the selection width. On the other hand, when the selection width is smaller than the intersecting section IS, the Doppler signals are extracted from the blood flow only in the selection width out of the blood flow intersecting with the ultrasonic beams 70. Consequently, the electric power of the Doppler signals extracted varies in accordance with the largeness of the selection width. Ž<P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT Ž
