The method involves measuring the location of the maximum of a knocking signal by a knocking sensor for a certain cylinder of an internal combustion engine. The location of the maximum of the knocking signal is compared with a stored optimal location of the maximum of the knocking signal. The location of the maximum of the knocking signal is compared with another knocking signal that is measured by a knocking sensor for another cylinder of the internal combustion engine. An independent claim is also included for a device for estimation of combustion material in an internal combustion engine.
