PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an HID lamp lighting device in which output corresponding to the HID lamp of different electric power is obtained only by connecting a power booster between an inverter ballast and an igniter, and to provide the power booster used for the same. SOLUTION: In the HID lamp lighting device which is composed of a direct current power supply of which the negative electrode side is earthed, and the inverter ballast driven by the direct current power supply, and which is used by connecting the HID lamp to the output end of the inverter ballast, by connecting one end of a resistor for the booster between the inverter ballast and the HID lamp and earthing the other end of the resistor for the booster, a bypath route for a resistance component of the inverter ballast is constituted of the resistor for the booster, and the HID lamp higher in output power than the rated value can be connected to the inverter ballast.
