PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a means for more appropriately evaluating focus with giving consideration to the whole main object. SOLUTION: The focus evaluation apparatus includes: a target area setting part; a frequency distribution generating part; a color component analyzing part; an evaluation area setting part; and a focus calculating part. The target area setting part sets the target area in a part of a photographed image photographed by an imaging apparatus. The frequency distribution generating part determines the frequency distribution of color components included in the image in the target area. The color component analyzing part sets at least one or more ranges of the main color components in the target area on the basis of the frequency distribution. The evaluation area setting part classifies the color components in each position of the photographed image in accordance with the range of the main color components and sets the focus evaluation area in the photographed image on the basis of the classification result.
