<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve contrast in a vertically-aligned liquid crystal display. <P>SOLUTION: In the liquid crystal display 10, a hollow 61 is partially formed on a liquid crystal layer 13 side of a color filter substrate 12. Further, a counter electrode 55 is formed as an electrode layer on the liquid crystal layer 13 side of the color filter substrate 12. In a portion A1 where the hollow 61 is formed, an insulator material 62 is provided on the counter electrode 55.
