<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform position detection with high accuracy and high reliability in a position detecting device for an elevator even if a photoelectric detector susceptible to disturbance light is used. <P>SOLUTION: The elevator including the position detecting device having a detecting object body 1 in a hoistway in which a car is hoisted for detecting the position of the car by detecting the detecting object body 1 by a position detector installed in the car includes a first position detector 2 installed in the car for detecting the detecting object body 1, and a second position detector 3 having a different detecting method from the first position detector 2 for detecting the position of the car. A detection signal of the second position detector 3 is set to have a wider detection width in the hoisting direction of the car than that of a detection signal of the first position detector 2.
