<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sewing machine in which the fixing position of the needle plate on the bed can accurately be determined by a simpler work. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A sewing machine includes: an rectangular engagement hole 241 of rectangular holes 24 serving as an engaged portion formed in a needle plate 21; a fitting portion 27 formed in a feed dog 23 and serving as an engaging portion, and a switching unit 34 which switches the feed dog 23 between a transfer position where the feed dog 23 transfers a workpiece cloth, and a needle plate adjusting position which differs from the transfer position and where the rectangular engagement hole 241 and the fitting portion 27 are fitted to each other thereby to determine a fixing position of the needle plate 21 on the bed. The switching unit 34 is driven to move the feed dog 23 to the needle plate adjusting position. Then, the rectangular engagement hole 241 of the needle plate 21 is fitted to the fitting portion 27 of the feed dog 23. Thus, the fixing position of the needle plate 21 on the bed is determined.
