LIQUID CRYSTAL CELL WITH COMPENSATOR LAYER, AND METHOD FOR MANUFACTURING THE SAME

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal cell readily manufacturable and providing the required degree of in-plane and out-of-plane compensation while reducing problems relating to a layered type compensator layer.

SOLUTION: In the liquid crystal cell including one or more compensator layers adjacent to an outer surface of a constraint layer of the liquid crystal cell without interposing an adhesive layer, each compensator layer contains a transparent amorphous polymeric birefringent material having an out-of plane birefringence more negative than -0.005. The compensator layers are preferably formed on the outer surface of the constraint layer of the liquid crystal cell by coating.
