PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a parking device of an automatic transmission capable of making shift torque substantially constant at all times when switching a shift lever from a range other than a parking range to a parking range. SOLUTION: A parking device 20 is attached so as to be able to swing a parking pole 23 in a flat surface orthogonally with an output shaft 14 and to be able to move in a direction parallel with the output shaft. The movement stroke of the parking pole and a gear width in the axial direction of the parking gear are set up so that an engagement section 23a is always engaged into a groove 22b between inclined teeth 22a of the parking gear 22 when the parking pole is moved by a cam 26a that moves together with a parking rod 21. Thereby, the engagement section can be engaged to the periphery of the gear by making the position of the engagement section coincide with that of the periphery of the gear. Accordingly, the shift torque can be made substantially constant at all times since a cam spring for changing the shift torque is no longer needed. An improved feeling of shifting is attained.
