<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device having good grayscale viewing angle characteristics. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device includes: electrodes which are formed on a pair of substrates to apply a voltage to liquid crystal molecules; a first alignment control layer which is held between the substrates to align liquid crystal molecules perpendicularly; and a liquid crystal layer between the substrates. The liquid crystal display device furthermore includes a second alignment control layer which is composed of an ultraviolet curing material and is formed so that the coexistence of two or more regions different by threshold voltages is allowed within one pixel and at least one of these regions has a threshold voltage higher than that of the first alignment control layer, and retardation (Δn*d) values of these regions are in a range of 350 nm±70 nm.
