<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a voltage resulting from the execution of APC from being changed by the effects of a leaked current in a circuit, and to perform a light quantity compensation by stably keeping the light quantity. Ž<P>SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus includes: a light detecting means which detects the light quantity of a laser; a storage means which stores the data of the light quantity which changes at a plurality of points in one scanning; a current control means which sets a current value to a lowest light quantity, and keeps the current value at a certain light quantity; a gain switching means for switching a maximum current value which can be output by the current control means by a gain; and a variable controlling means which variably controls the driving current for the laser by adding a current in response to the data from the storage means. A threshold value for switching the gain to the current set value is determined from the current value which has been set by the current control means and the data stored in the storage means.
