<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ultrasonic diagnostic apparatus for detecting a failure or abnormality of hardware in a period shorter than a diagnostic cycle by the ultrasonic diagnostic apparatus itself detecting a state that self-diagnosis is executable to execute tests successively even in an activation state of the apparatus. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A program management section 92 divides a self-diagnosis program for self-diagnosing a hardware element into sub-programs of prescribed block units and manages them time serially. In response to a stop instruction of the hardware element from a control unit 10, a self-diagnosis execution section 91 reads a sub-program to be executed next from the program management section on the basis of an execution progress managed by a self-diagnosis progress management section 93 to execute it. When a start instruction of the hardware element is received from the control unit 10 during the self-diagnosis, the self-diagnosis execution section 91 stops the sub-progress under progress and stores the execution progress to the self-diagnosis progress management section 93.
