PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thin document lighting system that are excellent in planarity of illuminance distribution, and allow opposing illumination capable of suppressing the occurrence of dark lines; and to provide an image reader. SOLUTION: The document lighting system includes a plurality of light-emitting elements and a reflection member for guiding light to a document read region having length and width. The plurality of light-emitting elements are arranged in a longitudinal direction. The interval between the light-emitting elements at the center section is wider than that between those at edges. An emission direction of the light-emitting element coincides with the width direction. The reflection member includes first to third reflection units. The second reflection unit is so arranged as to reflect light entering through the light-emitting element to the first and/or third reflection unit without passing through other reflection units. The first and third reflection units are so arranged as to mutually opposingly irradiate the document read region with light, and reflect light entering through the light-emitting element and/or the second reflection unit to the document read region without passing through other reflection units.
