<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To determine the delay possible amount of main injection timing in a regenerating combustion mode while considering a change of a torque demand. <P>SOLUTION: A method is provided for controlling combustion in an internal combustion engine having an exhaust gas post-treatment device. Here, when the demand of an event to regenerate the exhaust gas post-treatment device is detected, a regenerating combustion mode is carried out which is composed of pilot injection and delayed main injection. In a delayed regenerating combustion mode, injection timing for the main injection is controlled so that its delay is smaller than a delay threshold which is determined as a maximum timing delay showing desired torque and an injection fuel amount does not exceed a maximum fuel amount given by a stored smoking limit map. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT |
