<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable for a medical worker to operate the telephone unit used by him/her in an intuitive and simple way to control its sound volume for reception or transmission while his/her hears or talks to a patient. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The system is used in such a way to control the telephone sound volume for reception or transmission by operating an operation key in a first direction or a second direction reverse to the first direction. The sound volume for reception or transmission selected can increase by operating the operation key in a third direction crossing the first and second directions. The sound volume for reception or transmission selected can decrease by operating the operation key in a fourth direction reverse to the third direction. The results of such operations are shown on a display. Operating the operation key only in these four directions can control the telephone sound volume for reception and transmission, and the results are shown on the display.
