PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To appropriately improve image quality whichever of a moving image and a still image an image to be displayed is, when displaying the image by sub-field driving. SOLUTION: A magnitude of motion between frames is detected from image data (image signal) of a still image or a moving image. When motion between frames is large, the number of frames per unit time is made larger and the number of sub-frames per frame is made smaller in comparison with the case where motion between frames is small. On the other hand, when motion between frames is small, the number of frames per unit time is made smaller and the number of sub-frames per frame is made larger in comparison with the case where motion between frames is large.
