The brake has an operating element (6) for actuating the brake, and actuators (4a, 4b) for exerting a braking force. A sensor system (9) detects the presence of a driver, and a controller (1) evaluates a signal of the system. The controller controls the actuators such that the actuators exert a small brake force when the presence of the driver is detected. The controller controls the actuators such that the actuators exert a large brake force when the absence of the driver is detected. The large brake force is limited such that a vehicle is held at an inclination upto 30 percent. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating an electrically actuated foot-operated parking brake for a motor vehicle.
